The FreeDictionary.com defines image as a reproduction of the form of a person or object, the character projected to the public and a vivid description or representation. This can be further defined to encompass how we project who we are to others through our appearance, behaviour and communications choices – also known as the ABC’s of image.
The importance of image was confirmed by research conducted by Dr. Mehrabian at UCLA which concluded that 93% of how we are received by others is based on non-verbal elements. This also therefore means that what you say only constitutes 7% of how you are perceived.
We are judged by our covers every day at work, at job interviews, during social engagements and even during a trip to the grocery store.
The ABC’s of image can be broken into the following areas:
1) Appearance:
• Clothing – colour, style, fit, quality, condition
• Accessories
• Hair colour and style
• Makeup colour and application
• Hygiene
2) Behaviour
• Body language
• Posture
• Etiquette
• Wellness
• Warmth and approachability
• Stress management
3) Communications (also can overlap with behaviour elements)
• Presentation skills
• Verbal communications
• Written communications
You have ability to take charge of all of the above ABC’s through your image choices. There is no time like the present to review your image, begin projecting your best self, and ensure you are giving off your most authentic energy every day.
I hope this article inspires you to wear your authenticity!
